Old Dutch Solid Copper 2-1/4-Quart Beating Bowl (Kitchen)

One Review for This Product
I am rating this 3 stars because the bowl as shipped is nice, but I think the company should provide information about the lacquer.

I bought this bowl for the purpose of beating eggs. I read the reviews and information provided by Amazon so I knew I would have to spend some time getting the lacquer off. I also looked at the Old Dutch website before I started to see if they had any information about the bowl. Unfortunately they did not.

I decided to try the baking soda and water method of removing the lacquer. That didn't seem to work so I gave up after a couple hours. Then I purchased lacquer thinner which seemed to do something.

The worst part of this is that there is a small tag attached to the bowl. I thought at first it was just a label, but took a second look and it opens and has the cleaning and care instructions. There is no mention of removing the lacquer and I think the bowl might be used as purchased without all the hassle (maybe the outside is lacquered, but the inside is not?).

After all my work I have ended up with a very splotchy tarnished bowl that I am a little afraid to use because of all the chemicals and such.

I am so glad I didn't go with one of the more expensive bowls.

  1. We wanted to give our new daughter in law a nice copper bowl for Christmas. Fining one we could afford was much more difficult than I thought it would be. Found this source and ordered it. We, all of us, were very happy with the purchase.

  2. This is a great price, and a must have for a serious cook, as you may know whip eggs in a copper bowl will double the volume of the egg whites, adding a pinch of cream of tartar will likewise increase volume...you get fluffy eggs , and the bowl will last forever

  3. This is a nice copper bowl. It, however has a totally round bottom and can not stand on it's own. I happen to have a trivet that it rests on, but if you don't you should consider this fact if you actually plan on using this as a utensil for preparing anything. There was no indication that it had no flat bottom. I was totally surprised to see that when I received it. My wife HATES it for that very reason, but I love it. It's so nice and shiny that it makes all the other pots and pan look good again just by being close to them , hahaha

  4. If you are looking to make meringue cookies this is the best way to really whip the eggs. It also has helped me to make a better omlette. I think this would make a great gift for anyone who likes to play in the kitchen.

  5. I have never had a copper bowl before but heard they are the best for whipping eggs and heavy cream. I used it for whipping cream and what I heard is certainly true. I didn't give it the full five stars because it has a black mark inside the bowl which doesn't seem to affect its use.

  6. A copper bowl is a great addition to a kitchen, especially for recipes requiring beaten eggs. It also looks great as a decorative element when not being used. The manufacturer recommends a lacquer remover that is hard to find before using the bowl for food products. Instead, boil six quarts of water, add three tablespoons of baking soda and dip the bowl into the mixture using tongs. Keep immersing it in the foaming water until you see little plastic-like bits floating in the water. Make sure the lacquer is completely off by rubbing the bowl with a soft sponge or cloth. Wash and hand dry.

  7. Solid, durable, good looking product. Great for beating egg whites. Easy to clean and the convenient handles give the stability you want when pouring.

  8. As was written before you must remove the coating before using. I haven't been to the hardware store yet to buy the remover, and so this bowl is a great decoration to the kitchen but of no practical use.
One of these days I will spend the money, take the time, and remove the lacquer, and I'm sure it'll whip up eggs just great.

Bottom line, heed this and other reviews - just buying it is not the end of the process before you can use it.

    Looks great, though!

  9. I bought this bowl for whisking egg whites and it is perfect for whisking them. It also has a nice slick brushed Copper look.
